Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.85 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Lumix DMC-LX3 is the third compact digital camera from Panasonic to feature a 16:9 ratio image sensor, following on from the original LX1 model that was released back in 2005 and the LX2 in 2006. The Panasonic LX3 additionally offers more conventional 3:2 and 4:3 ratio images via a switch on the lens barrel. Other improvements on the Panasonic DMC-LX3 include a brand new 10 megapixel, 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor, Venus Engine IV image processor, 3.0-inch LCD screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 460K dot resolution, and extended ISO range (80-3200). ...

... The LX3 is a beautifully made and designed product that instantly makes your friends envious, but which importantly doesn't forget to be an effective photographic tool. It also manages to pull off the difficult task of appealing to a diverse range of users, from complete beginners to pro photographers alike, making it perfect for the 1-camera family. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 ($499) is not your typical compact camera. Other cameras offer more pixels, more zoom, and bigger LCDs. So what makes the LX3 so interesting? It has a fast, 24 - 60 mm Leica lens with optical image stabilization. Three available aspect ratios, all of which maintain the camera's 24 mm wide end. Manual controls, "film modes", and support for the RAW format. A high definition movie mode. Heck, there's even an optional viewfinder. ...

... While it certainly doesn't rival a digital SLR, the DMC-LX3 does deliver very good quality images for a compact camera. They have vibrant, saturated color, pleasing sharpness, low noise, and minimal purple fringing. The camera did tend to underexpose by around 1/3 stop, but that's easy enough to fix. ..."

Review (Summary): "There aren't many truly pocket-sized digicams that offer raw mode. There aren't very many that currently offer decent HD video capability as well. There are even less that feature a truly wide angle lens (24mm), and pocket-sized camera's with fast f/2 optics are even fewer and farther between. Add up these desirable characteristics and you end up with a single unique offering, the new Panasonic Lumix DCS LX-3, which just started to ship in Q4, 2008. ...

This camera's combination of high build quality, a terrific lens, wide angle coverage, a wide aperture second to none, and extensive and easy to use manual controls, makes it quite appealing to the serious photographer looking for a pocket camera. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Panasonic Lumix LX3 has a sensor resolution of 10.1 effective megapixels from a newly developed 1/1.63 inches RGB CCD image sensor, which is said to offer 40 percent higher sensitivity compared to the company's other ten megapixel digital cameras. ...

... The Panasonic LX3's noise handling is significantly improved over the LX2. Noise performance was the single biggest issue with the LX2, its Achilles heel. On the Panasonic LX3, we've had a change of image processors but the detail and color the LX2 captured at ISO 200 is roughly equivalent to ISO 800 on the LX3. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is targeted at the prosumer point & shoot market, those photography buffs that want DSLR-like control in a pocket-sized camera. The camera features 10-megapixel resolution, RAW mode, hot-shoe for external flash, optical stabilization, a very wide-angle 2.5x zoom lens (24-60mm), and HD Video recording.

CameraLabs has just reviewed this new model and felt while the camera isn't perfect, "it’s one of the best compacts for enthusiasts to date" as long as you don't mind the smaller focal range.

Review (Summary): "The never ending battle of finding the "perfect" compact seems to, well, never end. But they (the camera companies) keep trying, and we (the photo-junkie enthusiasts) keep buying. ...

On one end of the ring, we have the highly anticipated Canon G10. This is the 3rd generation of the new body style introduced with the G7, and it shows. ... On the other end of the ring, we have what appears to be just another upgrade to Panasonic's LX series, but in reality it's much more than that. ..."

Review (Summary): "The LX3 is an example of a species so endangered that the we were beginning to worry it had become extinct - a compact camera that photographers can get excited about. ...

... It's hard to tell what we're more impressed by - the ambitious lens or the decision to sit back and spectate during this round of the megapixel race. If pixels aren't just to become clutter on your hard drive, they must contain useful information and we've seen too many compact cameras that produce images that need to be down-sized to bring them up to standard. ..."
